Molasses Crinkles

Cori Dodds, adapted from Betty Crocker recipe – Wichita, Kansas – 1996

Ingredients

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • ¾ cup shortening
  • ¼ cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • ½ tsp ground cloves
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Small bowl of white granulated sugar

Instructions

  • Heat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Combine all dry ingredients (except white sugar). Set aside.
  • Combine wet ingredients.
  • Mix two bowls together.
  • Roll dough into 1 in. size ball and roll each one in sugar.
  • Place on NON-greased cookie sheet.
  • Bake 8-9 minutes. Cookies are done when cracking (still heaped, but will flatten).

Notes

You can either use dark or light molasses – light molasses makes a spicier cookie.
Makes about 4-dozen cookies.
